This summer, our little corner of Reading was filled with laughter, joy, and cherished moments as the grandparents came to visit. This was Lavinia’s last summer before starting school!
With Lavinia’s daycare on holiday, Nonna Patrizia, Nonno Giannetto, and Nonna Anna took the opportunity to come and spend quality time with her. Meanwhile, Franz and I managed our work. They rented an apartment just next door. It made it easy for us to balance work while being part of all the fun and activities.
Joyful activities time
From the moment they arrived, Vinnie’s days were filled with excitement. Saying she was thrilled to have her grandparents around is an understatement. Every day was a new adventure! The mornings often started with arts and crafts sessions. The dining table became a colourful mess of paper, paints, and glitter during these sessions. Nonne’s creative flair shone through as they helped Vinnie make everything from handmade cards to painted stones.

On the other hand, Nonno Giannetto was on wrestling and playground duties. This was to rotate the fine motor and mental activities with the more physical ones. Vinnie showed off her impressive climbing and swinging skills.

Afternoons were spent exploring the city centre. Vinnie led the way, pointing out her favourite spots, while Nonni (especially the ladies) couldn’t resist a bit of shopping. They spent hours wandering through shops, with the grandparents spoiling Vinnie with new bags and sparkly jewellery.

The highlight of our shopping trips was getting Vinnie’s back-to-school uniforms. She’s all set and excited for the new school year now. The try-out of the winter uniforms doesn’t look like it!

Cooking, playing, and watching the Olympics
The evenings were a perfect mix of homemade meals and playful moments. The kitchen was filled with the delicious aroma of traditional dishes as the grandmothers prepared meals with love. Vinnie was their little helper, learning recipes passed down through generations. The joy on her face as she played was contagious, making every moment precious.

And then there was the Olympics! Usually, we try to limit screen time, but this time was different. Watching the Olympics became a family affair. Vinnie was captivated by the athletes and the various sports on display. Inspired by what she saw, she’s eager to try new sports, adding to her already active lifestyle. Seeing how the games sparked her interest and broadened her horizons was heartwarming.
A bittersweet farewell
As the time to stay in Reading ended, it was time for Nonna Patrizia and Nonno Giannetto to head home. Their departure was bittersweet—full of hugs, some Vinnie’s tears, and promises to visit again soon. But the fun didn’t stop there. Nonna Anna stayed on for a few more days. With the weather remaining beautifully warm, we decided to take a trip to Henley-on-Thames.
Nonna Anna had never been to Henley; it was the perfect day out. We strolled along the river, enjoying the picturesque scenery. We indulged in a lovely playground time plus a nice ice cream. Vinnie, ever the energetic explorer, loved every minute of it. It was the perfect way to wrap up a wonderful visit, creating even more memories we’ll all treasure.

Cherished memories and looking forward
Looking back on these days, we can see Lavinia’s heart is whole. The time spent with the grandparents was not just fun but deeply meaningful. They brought so much joy to our home, and the memories created will stay with us forever. Vinnie learned, laughed, and loved every moment.
We’re already looking forward to the next visit, knowing that more adventures and unique moments await. Until then, we’ll hold onto the warmth of these days, cherish the happiness that filled our home, and prepare for school, which will start in a few weeks.
